Season 2008-09

Warstones began their FA Carlsberg Sunday Cup campaign with a home tie against opponents Leicester Polska. Upon the start of the game Warstones showed their intentions by playing some good attacking football. In the 10th minute a good ball from Love found Dodds in acres of space whose shot on goal was superbly saved by Chris Lewis and then the rebound fell to Ritchie and once again the keeper came to the rescue. 10 minutes later a through ball from Brennan found Ritchie who only had the keeper to beat but a great stop from Lewis once again denied Warstones from getting the opening goal. The attacking football from the home side finally resulted in a goal in the 28th minute, when Dodds run down the right hand side saw him pull the ball back for Rafferty whose strike on goal was palmed out by the keeper to a grateful Timmins who made no mistake and scored Warstones first goal of the game. The second half begun as the first half finished – in the 46th minute a pass from Dodds found Briggs who rifled home a 25 yard shot to give Warstones a deserved 2 goal lead. 5 minutes later Polska saw a decent spell of pressure rewarded with a penalty. Scott Morton stepped up and hit the ball high and wide. Darren Evans entered the fray and in the 61sth minute a precise pass from the experienced midfielder found Ritchie who slotted home to give Warstones a 3 goal lead. In the 64th minute Ritchie played the ball to Dodds who composed himself and rammed home the ball to make it 4-0. 3 minutes later Chris Rudkin hit home a sweet half volley to give Polska a consolation goal on his 50th appearance. As the game was coming to a close in the 75th minute a training ground free-kick resulted in Briggs finding Evans who beautifully chipped the ball to find Russon who passed the ball into the net to make it 5-1 to Warstones.
