Season 2009-10
Match Report | LEICESTER POLSKA recorded their first win if the season, giving a superb performance to triumph 5-4 over Birstall Athletic, in a game that arguably was not as close as the scoreline suggested. Mark Inglis opened the scoring after just 8 minutes when breaking through the Birstall defence. But Birstall were level just 3 minutes later as they converted a penalty after Andzrej Podburalzynski bought down the Birstall forward on a very rain soaked pitch. Some referees may have carded him, but lucl was on Polska's side this time as the referee decided against any action. Birstall then went 2-1 up on 19 minutes as they looked to get a foothold on the game. But Polska were working very hard and the impressive Andy Staines bought the scores level 10 minutes later to leave the half time score at 2-2. Mark Inglis then put Polska back in front in the very first minute when a cross-come-shot flew over Luke Day in goal. The game was then on a knife edge but Polska missed some decent chances and then went 4-2 up after Tom Lane scored his 120th Polska goal from the penalty spot after Alan Chater had been fouled in the area. The goal was a landmark as it was the 400th Polska goal to be scored at Knighton Park. But Birstall edged back in it at 4-3 after pulling a goal back on 74 minutes from a free kick. Unfortunately for Polska the free kick was harsh in the first place after Jamie White was penalised for a foul when TV replays showed he clearly made a clean challenge and won the ball just outside the area. The game was made safe on 81 minutes after Alan Chater also scored a debut goal to make it 5-3, with Savvo Wieczorek blasting in the after the ball may or may not have already crossed the line. Both men claimed the goal, so it went to the 'Dubious' / Dubious Polska Goals Panel who meet regularly in the Royal Oak to decide such matters. In the end the vote was virtually even so the men had to decide by coming up with a decent verse og gangsta rap inside five minutes. Birstall got a fourth goal 5 minutes into injury time, but with the referee blowing up for full time as Polska took a centre from the late goal, there was much celebrating as the Polska massiiive came onto the pitch and decided to parade Mark Ilnicki around as their token lucky charm. edited by Mark (01/11/2009) | |
