Match Report | Huge controversy here, and once again all down to the man in black. Tom Lane opened the scoring within minutes, and Polska looked like they were going to crush the Steelers with an opening display of pure excellence. Then, just ten minutes into the game, Tom beats the Steel offside trap, and has a clear run through on goal. The keeper comes charging out of his area. Tom, as quick witted as ever, decides to simply slide the ball through the keepers legs at pace so that it travels into the empty net. Before he can shout MEGS the keeper puts both hands down and STOPS THE BALL! Five yards out of his area, and as the last man, he has to go! But no! Mr Barry Shufflebotham, the match official decides that as it is Sunday, the laws of the game don't apply. The keeper is only yellow carded, to the fury of the Polska crew, and Smith Steel eventually overpower their visitors to win. Chris Lewis displays his well known controversial side by saying that 'it's only Sunday football, so there was no need for a red card'. Polska officially complain to the League and insist that they are never given this referee again. edited by Mark (16/01/2008) | |
