Season 2008-09
Match Report | The League season opened under the latest Football Association initiative “Respect”. This gives a Captain a bit more to do than just toss the coin because he now has to convey the Referees thoughts to his players throughout the match. He is also the only player who may query or speak to the Referee. A typical request being to ask his players to calm down or the book will come out. But, on the 60th minute the Birstall Captain made a two footed tackle, which did not leave the referee Liam Snoddin much to be conveyed. By then though the result was never in doubt, and although Birstall managed the odd attack it was only a case of how many the Nomads could score, but the final pass was their downfall, and the second half remained goal less. Nomads opened the scoring after only 15 minutes when Joe Moran proved the value of chasing the ball sometimes in lost causes. Joe won the ball and crossed for Luke Winfield to put the ball into the back of the net. His celebrations resulted in a caution. Birstall heads seemed to drop, even at this early stage of the match. On 31 minutes it was a Jake Duffy free kick that was responsible for Nomads increasing their lead. His cross into a crowded goalmouth was finally touched home by Scott James. Nomads completed their scoring on 44 minutes. A precise pass by Jake Duffy found Joe Moran clear and after taking the ball past the keeper, placed the ball home in style. So, a good start to the season for the new manager Stu Dealey but he could need a large squad. Over the next few weeks, success in the early season cup competitions will mean fixtures come thick and fast. | |
