The objective of Battle of Britain Charity Cup is to raise funds for the gallant members of the RAF, however for the players it is the first opportunity to win silverware. Nomads went into the final as the under dogs, their opponents being Barrow Town of the newly formed EMCL, but they were given a trouncing. Barrow Town’s plans were not helped on 17 minutes, when they had a player dismissed for handling the ball in the box, Lee Connolly making no mistake from the spot, giving Nomads a 2-0 lead. The match had started at a fast pace and Barrow Town should have opened the scoring on only 5 minutes but Carl Muggleton saved the day by using his legs. The importance of this save came 2 minutes later when Lee Connolly put Joe Moran through who shot first time and the net bulged. Michael Reeve added his name to the score sheet on 28 minutes. Collecting the ball just inside the half, he set off on a run; Barrow’s defence could not keep pace, leaving him to slot the ball home in style. On 33 minutes he was denied a second by a good safe and Lee Connolly went close on 45 minutes. The second half was only 9 minutes old when Michael Reeve did notch his second, this time Joe Moran being the provider. A couple more chances fell to Joe Moran and Matt Boyles before Barrow Town had a period of pressure but the Nomads defence stood firm. The icing on the cake was provided by Jake Duffy, who rounded the keeper on 82 minutes to make it 5-0 and four minutes before time a through ball from Ashley Morris was won by Luke Padmore who completed the scoring. The B of B was won, 12 goals had been scored along the way without any reply. Rob Morrell edited by Mervyn (19/09/2008) |
