Match Report | Before the kick-off, the Nomads realised they would be tested by the inform Thurnby, but three points would leave them with matches against the bottom two teams for the championship. The Nomads took the lead on 8 minutes, when a free kick was awarded on the edge of the goal area. Sam McMahon took the kick; he picked out Scott James who headed home. The last thing a team wants after taking the lead is to immediately concede a goal, but it nearly happened. After leaving the Nomads defender flat footed, the Thurnby forward slid the ball past Sean Bowles, but Danum Russell got back and cleared off the line. Just before half-time the forward was put through again, but Sean Bowles produced a good save. The first chance of the second half fell to Anstey when Troy Bucalossi pinched the ball in midfield and tried a shot from outside the area, but the ball went wide of the post. Michael Reeve was then put through but he could not control the ball, however it fell to Sam McMahon who worked the keeper. Matt Boyles clipped the cross bar, and both Jake Duffy and Michael Reeve were later denied by good saves. The more the half progressed Thurnby were restricted to shots from a distance, and Nomads who finished the better could not put away the chances. The bench had been graced by Steve Walsh and Carl Muggleton but neither of them became substitutes. The last three matches had produced only 2 goals, but with none conceded, the Nomads had gained 7 points and only a further 5 points would be needed. Robert Morrell | |
