After the horrors of 2 weeks ago against Wigston, Polska put up one of their best performances of the season to go down fighting 2-1 to Leicester Foxes. Foxes are top of the league, and will unquestionably win the league. Prior to this win they had won their last 6 league games, scoring 22 and conceding only 6. And on another day, Polska may well have claimed a point. Although they had to surrender a fair amount of possession in the game, Polska defended superbly as a team, and with Gaglewski and man of the match Wisniewski a useful outlet on the flanks, and with Tabaka upfront, Polska looked well set up for a point. Andrzej Podburalcynski made two stunning saves in the first half to keep the score 0-0 at half time. This was a good start for Polska, a real bonus to be kicking downhill in the second half having not conceded. After more pressure, Wieczorek and Tabaka had a hand in the Polska goal, which was tucked away in the right hand corner by Radek Gaglewski on 65 minutes. Foxes were becoming frustrated and sent for Jamie Aston off the bench. Then came the turning point of the game. Polska felt that referee was Sam Wesson was possibly influenced by the home players as they began to persistently complain about Podburalcynski time wasting for goal kicks. It was the refs call, but he then penalised Andrzej for that very offence, and Aston netted from the resulting indirect free kick ten yards out, on 76 minutes. He could have had a warning at first, but the ref made the call and Polska needed to defend the resulting kick but didn't. We do not criticise refs so we accept the decision. Aston then scrambled home again on 94 minutes as the ref added a long looking 9 minutes additional time on at the end. It was a fair result, but Polska will feel frustrated at coming so close to getting something from the league leaders. Player Ratings: ANDRZEJ: 2 stunning saves first half, should have been cleverer instead of getting penalised second half, but his best game of the season. LANE: Took a while to get going, but then had a fine game with some excellent defensive headers. 1-0 to Polska when he went off. KRAGULEC: Powerful and energetic performance from the midfielder today. Came off on 85 minutes with cramp. DZIOPA: The Saturday partying took its toll reducing the midfielder to a quiet game! WISNIEWSKI: Excellent and energetic performance from the young winger. Man of the match, covered huge ground all game. ALAN CHATER: A little quiet first half but came into the game as it went on, and provided good defensive cover. TABAKA: Looked dangerous in the build up to the goal, too isolated today to be fully effective. PAJAK: Quality first half with no nonsense defending. GAGLEWSKI: Gave Foxes plenty to think about when switching wings, took the goal well and good game. WIECZOREK: Too far apart from Tabaka to be a strong enough influence on the game. MARK CHATER: Solid defending, found himself forward with a chance on goal late on. SUBS: WYSOCZANSKI & CRANE: Too little pitch time to influence game |
