Match Report | LEICESTER POLSKA's record breaking cup run ended in controversial circumstances as they lost 4-3 on penalties to Birstall RBL in an action packed match. Going into the second half of the season having won all 6 of their cup games in the second half of 2014, Polska lacked urgency in the first half, and found themselves 2-0 down on 17 and 42 minutes as Birstall enjoyed a strong first half. Switching Polska skipper Dominik Krol at half time worked wonders for the hosts, and Krol himself pulled a goal back on 51 minutes, converting a long range free kick with a powerfully unstoppable shot. This seemed to galvanise Polska, and Savo Wieczorek made it 2-2 on 57 minutes, converting a Marek ball to put him on 108 goals and move into second place on the all time Polska goal scorers list, 20 goals behind Tom Lane, and overtaking Mark Inglis. Polska had a storming second half, and seemed to have Birstall on the ropes, who in the end picked up 4 cautions in a bad tempered match. Shortly after, Sav had what a decent looking goal ruled out for offside due to a dubious flag from a Birstall assistant, but on 73 minutes, Jarek unfortunately gave away a penalty, which Birstall tucked away to make it 2-3. On 85 minutes, Marek's through ball to Przemek saw the Birstall keeper take him out for a clear penalty, which Marek converted to make it 3-3 and send the game into extra time. With no more goals, the penalty shoot out saw Polska twice edge in front, only for 3 players to miss spot kicks to prevent them from going into 2 separate semi finals in the same season for the first time in their history. Special mention to Rys Procinski for running the line in an intense game. subs: Dobrzynski - Kucinger (57 mins) Mazurek - Szczypczyk (62 mins) Jedraszczyk - Wieczorek (74 mins) Goals: Krol (51 mins) Wieczorek (57 mins) Dziopa (85 mins, penalty) | |
