Season 2008-09
Match Report | With only a few matches played it is too early to make any judgements but Ashby Ivanhoe look to be one of the leading teams in the Senior League this season. They were sitting top of the Senior League with a better goal difference than the Nomads, so this match was going to be a tester. After a Lee Connolly penalty and a strike by Eddie Appleton, the Nomads went in at half-time leading 2-0. These two goals later proved to be significant to the final outcome. The second half opened with Nomads attacking down each flank, and they gained a number of corners, but the match winning third goal would not arrive. Would the Nomads rue the odd wasted chance? With 15 minutes to go Ashby Ivanhoe’s top scorer Richard Hanslow scrambled a goal back, and thoughts of penalty kicks became more real. A free kick on the edge of the box caused an anxious moment, and at times the Nomads could not stand on ceremony. But, as the minutes ticked away Ashby relied more on the long ball over the top, which tended to play into the hands of the Nomads defence. The final whistle went, there had not been goals galore, but the Nomads had shown they can defend when needed to. This Competition can now be put to bed until March. | |
